HAWAI‘I’S FIRST WORKFORCE SECTOR PARTNERSHIP LAUNCHES THE UNIVERSAL BANKER TRAINING PROGRAM
Hawai‘i’s first sector partnership was launched in June 2016, championed by Rich Wacker, president and CEO of American Savings Bank, and the Hawai‘i Bankers Association. Banking executives and human resource directors identified high priority talent needs in banking and finance and developed an agenda for improving their talent pipeline. Bank subject matter experts and University of Hawai‘i curriculum design team from Windward Community College worked together to develop a universal banker curriculum, specific to Hawai‘i, that can be taken online, face-to-face or in a blended format. Topics covered included banking products, banking ethics, business communications skills, and customer service in banking specific to Hawai‘i.
On August 24, 2017, twenty-five participants from 7 Hawai‘i banks recently completed the first Universal Banker training. This sector partnership brought together the University of Hawai‘i and Hawai‘i Bankers Association to address the changes needed in the banking and financial workforce.

Coolin’aire - A Culinary Jazz Odyssey

Coolin’aire - A Culinary Jazz Odyssey at the Palikū Theatre was a performance that thoroughly wowed the senses. The audience was treated to smooth jazz rhythms and polished voices of “the Chef," Albert Maligmat (Society of Seven) and “the Apprentice,” Annamarie Love along with creative and beautiful artistry from 24/7 Dance Force. Culinary Institute of the Pacific (CIP) students created and served the dishes on stage and also the chocolate lovers finale event that was enjoyed by the audience. The incredible chocolate drummer sculpture was done by chef David Brown of Kap‘iolani CC. Coolin’aire was created, produced and directed by Chef John Richards, CTE Dean – Kapi‘olani CC. This collaboration benefited Kapi‘olani CC, Honolulu CC, and Windward CC’s culinary and foodservice programs. Mahalo to all who supported this effort. Ko‘olau Shrimp Pa‘ina 2017

The Rotary Club of Windward Oahu and Windward Community College came together for the second annual Ko‘olau Shrimp Pa‘ina on Saturday, March 11, 2016 at Windward Community College. WCC music talent set the mood for the evening as Miss Hawaii sang a song and Miss East Oahu performed a hula number. Everyone dined on a delicious shrimp feast prepared by the Uala Leaf Cafe team and volunteers. Funds raised through silent auction and ticket sales went to Rotary community national and international projects, and student scholarships for WCC’s Hiilaniwai Foodservice Innovations Program.

Windward Community College Named First College in Hawaii to Become a Blue Zones Project Approved Worksite

“The campus is a very spiritual place where we take care of one another, the land, and make strides toward sustainability. Many of our efforts align perfectly with Blue Zones Project,” said Dr. Jamie Boyd, Ph.D. associate professor, health programs coordinator at Windward Community College. “With the guidance, support and proven methods of Blue Zones Project, we were able to embody the Blue Zones® ideals of living well. We are excited to align with other communities around the country that are involved in this important movement.”

The Windward Community College Office of Career and Community Education announced a new partnership with Hawaiʻi Small Business Development Center (Hawaiʻi SBDC). Under the agreement, business consultants from Hawaiʻi SBDC will meet on campus with Windward CC student entrepreneurs and community members to provide free advice and consultation on a wide range of business topics: starting a business, strategy formation, pursuing financing, marketing and sales, creating a financial management system and improving company performance and more.

WCC - Hawai‘i Ocean Education Academy Promotes Ocean Education for All

Windward Community College - Hawai‘i Ocean Education Academy (HOEA) team members recently attended the National Association of Aquatic Professionals Convention in San Diego, CA. The HOEA team promoted WCC programs at the Exposition, and Workforce Coordinator Ian ‘Akahi Masterson presented at a breakout session encouraging the American Red Cross to offer a basic ocean lifeguard training and certificate as a stepping stone to the United States Lifesaving Association (USLA) Lifeguard Agency training programs.
With over 19 million surfers worldwide and billions of people journeying to coastlines across the globe annually, Masterson believes that ocean safety education should be made readily available to the public and introduced HOEA as a national leader in ocean education with innovative college programming and educational certificate pathways in ocean recreation, ocean safety management and workforce skills training opportunities.
The HOEA team also visited the Miramar Community College Regional Lifeguard Academy during a USLA Lifeguard training scenario at Ocean Beach Pier. The San Diego City Lifeguard Agency runs the program in partnership with the college. San Diego Fire-Rescue Lifeguard Chief Rick Wurts shared curriculum and encouraged WCC to articulate with the Miramar program in order that a national platform is developed to meet workforce needs for USLA-level ocean lifeguard services.

Jim Bagnola Leadership Seminar “Inspires” at WCC

KANE'OHE, HI – One hundred eleven state government and local business leaders attended and participated in “Leading is Everybody’s Business,” led by executive coach and International speaker Jim Bagnola on Tuesday, October 20 at Windward Community College.
Bagnola’s dynamic presentation focused on the relationship of leadership and body-mind management with emphasis on the influence of thinking patterns on health, happiness, success, and the capacity to lead. Lively discussion and interactive group exercises throughout the day helped to illustrate facets of leading in a collaborative and fun way. Sessions included topics on:The Art and Science of LeadingRelationship and Communication IntelligenceLeading is Management of EnergyHealthy Leadership Equals a Healthy Organization“Jim's presentation was truly inspiring and motivating. The activities were fun, interactive and it tied in well with the points he made in being a leader. I was fortunate to collaborate with people from state government and private industry and look forward to the next leadership series,” said Ellen Ishida-Babineau, Dean of Academic Affairs at Windward Community College.
