Contemporary Guitar

Students will learn chord progressions and scales to utilize the guitar as an accompaniment or lead instrument. The course will examine common harmonic devices and their applications as heard in popular music applied to the guitar. Basic music knowledge and playing experience is helpful but not required.  Please bring your guitar to class.

--Common chords & movable bar chords
--Inverted triads
--Inverted 4 part-chords
--The harmonized major scale
--Chord construction
--Common chord progressions
--The 12-bar blues
--The major scale 
--The pentatonic scale
--The blues scale

Michael Kato  has over 25 years of experience as a professional musician and music instructor. He has studied privately with world-renowned music educator Dick Grove and at the Guitar Institute of Technology (GIT) in Hollywood, California. He has additional studies at the University of Hawai‘i and holds a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Technology & Music Education and a Masters of Education (MEd) in Educational Technology. Michael has provided group and private instruction through the non-profit organization Introduction to the Arts (ITTA), Honolulu Community College, Kapiolani Community College, the Hawai‘i Music Institute at Windward Community College, and the Word of Life Christian Academy.
